In
order to highlight the appreciating role of students and youth
community in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention program in
Bangladesh, a 2-member delegation of mass communication
oriented development organization CCD Bangladesh will leave
for England on Saturday.
The
delegation team includes Program Coordinator of Bangladesh
Advanced Students Alliance (BASA), a students' forum of CCD
Bangladesh A H M Abdul Hai and BASA Organizer A S M Anisur
Rahman Litu. The British Council is supporting the exchange
visit under its Connecting Futures Project.
During
their visit CCD delegation will attend a number of views
exchange, seminar, dialogue, festival and Eyeball Bus Campaign
at the premises of University of Sussex, University of
Cambridge and in Brighton and London from November 26 to
December 4. They will also take part in the programs to be
held in observance of World AIDS Day in Brighton, London,
Cambridge and Sussex.
Both
of them will meet leaders of Students Stop AIDS (SSA) and
Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW), UK counterpart of BASA,
in Sussex and London. During the visit, the delegation will
highlight HIV/AIDS scenario and HIV/AIDS prevention activities
in Bangladesh. They will also highlight the roles of CCD
Bangladesh, British Council, BASA and Youth Voice in the field
of AIDS prevention in Bangladesh. Moreover, they will try to
build up mutual respect and understanding among the youth
communities of these two countries through sharing knowledge
and experience.
On
the occasion of World AIDS Day 2005, Students Partnership
Worldwide (SPW) and its co-organization Students Stop AIDS (SSA)
arranged weeklong programs. As a part of the program, SPW and
SSA conducted Eyeball Bus Campaign at the premises of
University of London Union. Members of Bangladesh Advanced
Students Alliance (BASA), co-organization of CCD Bangladesh
actively took part in the campaign.
AIDS
activists of SPW, SSA and BASA wore red T-shirts, held long
white box of eyeball and invited the pedestrians and city
commuters to draw attention of the world leaders through their
comments and signature to take immediate step to ensure
treatment for HIV/AIDS infected people by 2010. They also
played on drums and musical tune round the bus to draw the
attention of the city people to express their solidarity with
the humanitarian demand for the AIDS vulnerable people.
Among
others, Coordinator of CF Project in British Council, UK Sally
Anderson, Campaign and Network Coordinator of SPW Finnuala
Murphy, SSA Member Sahil Dutta and Katy Athersuch and BASA
Members A S M Anisur Rahman and A H M Abdul Hai attended the
campaign program with much commitment.
Notably,
the 2-member BASA delegation is now working with SSA to
observe World AIDS Day 2005 in different cities of UK. Under

supporting this exchange visit of BASA in UK.
Students
Stop AIDS (SSA), co-organization of Students Partnership
Worldwide (SPW) chalked out elaborate program to observe World
AIDS Day 2005 in a befitting manner in the premises of
University of Sussex (US) in United Kingdom (UK). The members
of Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance (BASA),
co-organization of CCD Bangladesh actively took part in all
the preparatory and key-activities relating to the day in US
campus in UK.
A
planning and weekly meeting of SSA was held at the US Students
Union conference room in the afternoon on Monday. SSA members
including Sahil Dutta, Katy Athersuch, Kelly Zimbler, Rebecca
Ashley, Romy Dervis, Camilla Alfred, BASA members A S M Anisur
Rahman Litu and A H M Abdul Hai and UNISEX Representative Tom
Borne addressed the meeting.
Speakers
expressed solidarity and commitment to work together to combat
HIV/AIDS considering it a global crisis for the humanity. They
also recommended developing more communication programs to
improve mutual respect and understanding among the youths of
two countries.
BASA
members expressed gratitude for the cordial hospitality and
sincerity of SSA members. In their speech, BASA members
focused on HIV/AIDS scenario and AIDS prevention activities of
BASA and other GO and NGOs of Bangladesh.
It
was decided in the meeting that SSA will arrange Red Fair, Sex
Quiz and music function ‘Let’s make Eastslope Red’ in
Library Square in the morning, Candle Vigil in the afternoon
and film show ‘A Closer Walk’ in the evening on December
01.
The
BASA members also visited the main office of UNISEX in the
university campus in the evening and expressed interest to
work together to promote AIDS prevention movement more in the
concerned countries.

importance and means of ensuring safe blood transfusion, a
series of campaign programs were held in the higher
educational institutions of Rajshahi region concluding on
Thursday.
Mass
communication oriented development organization CCD Bangladesh
and HIV Program of CCDB jointly organized these campaign
programs in Komela Hoque Degree College, Rajshahi Govt.
Women's College and Rajshahi Govt. College from 04 to 06
October. Members of Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance (BASA)
and Youth Voice, huge number of students and teachers of the
respective institutions actively took part in the safe blood
campaign programs. Program Officer of HIV Program of CCDB
Nurul Alom Shuvo conducted different technical sessions in the
workshops on safe blood transfusion. CCD Program Coordinator
Hossain Abdul Hai, Campaign Officer Abdul Muttaleb Jewel,
Program Organizer Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu and Program Assistant
Abu Tayab Shah Mohammad facilitated the workshops.
Principal
of Komela Hoque Degree College Md Mohosin Ali, Vice-Principal
of Rajshahi Govt. Women's College Prof Ayesha Khatun and
Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) and Program
Organizer of CCD Laura Martina Bos inaugurated the workshops
as chief guests in the respective educational institutions.
Speakers in the
functions said, For the sake of ensuring safe blood
transfusion in the country, students have to play pioneer role
in creating mass awareness in this regard. They called upon
the students to test the blood before donating and receiving
blood even in case of urgent necessity for the safety and
security of their own life and for the nation.
Regional
newspapers are playing key role in creating newspaper readers
and in building and influencing public opinion in Bangladesh.
So it was urged to provide all-out cooperation including
necessary subsidy in making these newspapers as an emerging
industry.

urged it in a colloquium on Reducing Price of Dhaka Dailies:
Problems and Potentiality of Regional Newspapers held at the
conference room of Rajshahi City Corporation today
(Wednesday). With the view to finding out media preference,
barriers and its solution in uplifting press and media sector,
mass communication oriented development organization BCDJC and
CCD Bangladesh jointly organized the colloquium.
Speakers
expressed deep concern and said that with the excess reduction
of price of a few of the dailies published from Dhaka; the
regional newspapers fell into a serious competition in the
media market. It causes a serious crisis in marketing regional
newspapers. They also said, investing legal money it is quite
impossible to publish and market the standard newspapers with
excessively less price. Some of the newspapers of Dhaka having
been controlled by the owners of black money; it is being
possible to market the dailies at such a less price.
The
publishers and editors of the newspapers published from
Rajshahi demanded Government patronization and removing taxes
and duties over importing papers for the all round development
of the regional newspapers. They also demanded to change the
politically biased discriminatory policy in advertisements and
to remove all type of corruption regarding distribution of
advertisements.

A
total of 25 journalist leaders of different media institutions
and editors of different local and regional newspapers
actively took part in the colloquium.
The
empowerment and ensuring human rights of the Saontal people
living in the northern region of the country have been urged.
Expressing
this urge in a students assembly held at the premises of
English department of Rajshahi College on the occasion of
International Indigenous Day, speakers said, human
deprivation, torture and harassment is going on upon the
Saontal people and their human rights is being demolished
everywhere. They called upon all the concerned to provide
equal rights and facilities to the indigenous and minority
people including the Saontal community.

AIDS
awareness is inevitable to prevent AIDS epidemic in the
country and the mass media and the media personnel have to
play the pioneer role in creating massive awareness in this
respect.
Speakers
said it while addressing the closing and certificate giving
ceremony of the two-day training workshop on AIDS reporting
held at the CCDB training room at Chapai Nawabgonj on Monday.
They also said, having no medicine of AIDS, it is very
difficult to save the people from HIV infection without its
proper knowledge and alertness. Here is the key role of the
journalists and media people to create mass awareness on this
issues, they said.

total of 30 journalists of local and national newspapers, news
agencies, television and radio working at Shibgonj, Godaghari
and Chapai Nwabgonj actively took part in the workshop.
A
series of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as a part of the
National Assessment of HIV/AIDS Infected and other Vulnerable
Children began in Rajshahi yesterday.
Five
different FGD’s of the various types of people were
arranged on the first two days of the program. Centre for
Women and Children Studies-CWCS arranged this series with the
assistance of UNICEF. Centre for Communication and
Development-CCD is providing the necessary assistance locally
in this regard.
Yesterday
the first FGD was with the adolescent girls while the second
one with the adolescent boys- both held at the CCD
conference room. Today there were three FGD’s- first with
university students, second with the ordinary man and the
third with the married women.
In
these sessions prominent social scientist, professor of
Dhaka University and the Chairman of CWCS Dr. Ishrat
Sharmeen spoke as the chief facilitator while Md Abdul
Hai Plato, Md. S K Selim Reza, Heerana Parvez and Farheeda
Islam co-facilitated the FGD’s.
Calling
upon the teachers to play significant role in making the
students aware of HIV/AIDS issues, it has been urged to create
a favorable environment in the educational institutions for
the open discussion on HIV/AIDS issues.
Mayor
of Rajshahi City Corporation Mizanur Rahman Minu MP
underscored the positive role of the teachers in HIV/AIDS
prevention while speaking as chief guest in the Advocacy
Meeting today. Above hundred of principals, vice-principals
and departmental heads of different colleges of Rajshahi
actively took part in the meeting.

his speech City Mayor said, due to ignorance the students and
youth people are becoming involved in high-risk behavior and
its rate is increasing gradually. Therefore if they are not
made aware of the serious impact and result of HIV infection
properly, it will welcome AIDS epidemic causing a great havoc
for the nation.
Calling
upon the teachers to perform the duty of making their students
aware of HIV/AIDS issues, City Mayor said, no more shyness or
hesitation, rather it is high time to create an enabling
environment in every educational institution for open
discussion of HIV/AIDS issues.

The
youth people are in a high risk of HIV infection in the whole
world including Bangladesh. It is not enough only to make them
aware, rather they have to be actively involved in AIDS
preventive activities.

of Asia and Middle East Program of Health Link Worldwide David
Curtis said it while speaking as chief guest in a dialogue on
HIV/AIDS issues held at the seminar room of Institute of
Bangladesh Studies (IBS) in Rajshahi University (RU) today. He
also said, the young boys and girls are becoming affected with
HIV/AIDS at a high rate in every country round the world.
Therefore it is not possible to prevent such a deadly disease
without active involvement of the students and youth community
in the AIDS prevention movement, he added.

folk cultural function in Rajshahi on Monday night. They

Bangladesh
achieved positive success in family planning activities. At
present about 60% couple of the country use birth control
method and play a vital role to control the population here.
In
a discussion meeting and quiz competition held on the occasion
of World Population Day on Monday, speakers disclosed this
hopeful information. They also said that mass media is playing
a positive and effective role to make the family planning
program a success. The huge media coverage inspired the mass
people to use birth control method.

Organiser of Youth Voice and Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance -
BASA, youth wing of CCD A B M Saiful Islam Suman left Bangladesh on
Saturday to attend an international youth festival
titled as Summer School 2005 to be held at Puneh in India.
He
is one of the members of the delegation team attending the festival
under the supervision of the British Council from Bangladesh. As a
representative of CCD and Bangladesh, Suman will present detail strategy
and working experience of communication and folk cultural activities
performed in Bangladesh for creating mass awareness of HIV/AIDS with the
involvement of local youth people. Moreover, he will exchange views and
experience of skill and role of the Bangladeshi youth in different
social, cultural and development issues with the youth delegates of
other countries.
About
3oo youth delegates from 80 countries of the world will take part in the
international Summer School to held from April 06 to 12, 2005.
A
B M Saiful Islam Suman is a meritorious student of Mass Communication
department of Rajshahi University (RU). He has been playing a vital role
in different socio-cultural programs as an active member of Youth Voice
and BASA since the beggining of the organisation. All the members and

Close Up 1: Bangladesh is Looking for You and ATN Bangla. They have been
selected for the final hit in the national level to be held in Dhaka.
Moshiur
Rahman Rinku, one of the organizers of Youth Voice was nominated among
the best eight artists in both of the star search competitions in
Rajshahi region.
Meanwhile,
another organizer of Youth Voice Wasim Kabir Polash annexed a good
position in the best eight list in the selection of Close Up 1:
Bangladesh is Looking for You held in Rajshahi region on 19 June.
Moreover,
another member of Youth Voice Ehsan Manik was also included in the
best-eight singers in the star search competition of ATN Bangla.
More
than three thousand young artists took part in these star search
competition.
On
their remarkable achievement in the competition, the officials and
workers of CCD, Youth Voice and students wing Bangladesh Advanced
Students' Alliance (BASA) congratulated and wished more significant
success in the final round of the competition to be held in Dhaka soon.
CCD

of NTV, ATN Bangla and Close Up for holding such a grand arrangement of
star search from the remote area of the country.
80%
of the total demand of blood in Bangladesh comes from the professional
blood donors causing a heavy threat of spreading blood-borne diseases
including HIV/AIDS.
Speakers
disclosed it while addressing the opening
session of the daylong blood donation
program held at the premises of
Central Library of Rajshahi Govt. College here today. Mass communication
oriented development organization Centre for Communication and
Development-CCD and its students wing Bangladesh Advanced Students
Alliance (BASA) in collaboration with National AIDS/STD Program (NASP)
and UNICEF organized the camp. Blood Transfusion Department of Rajshahi
Medical College Hospital provided technical support in the program.
Speakers
also said, the total blood transfusion system has come to the clasp of
the professional blood donors. A total of 2,50000 units of blood is
needed for the purpose of treatment every year but 80% of the demand is
fulfilled by the professional donors. The volunteer donors who are the
members of families, relatives or friends of patients meet other 20% of
the demand. As the professional blood donors are usually drug addicted
and affected with Hepatitis A, B, C, HIV/AIDS and other infectious
diseases, the mass people who receive the blood also become infected
with the same diseases.
That
is why; speakers underscored the safe blood transfusion system as
inevitable to prevent all the infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS.
The
opening session of the program was addressed, among others, by Program
Coordinator of CCD Hossain Abdul Hai, Campaign Officer Abdul Muttalib
Jewel, Program Organizer Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu, Convenor of the Program
Rehana Hoque Runa, BASA Organizer Nasim Ahmed, Arifur Rahman Jewel,

A
huge number of students of the college donated their blood voluntarily
during the program. The collected blood was handed over to the
authorities of Blood Transfusion Department of Rajshahi Medical College
Hospital for the emergency treatment of the poor people there.
All of us have to speak about AIDS. We have to discuss the AIDS related
issues without any hesitation, shyness and embarrassing in the Adda,
mosque, temple, educational institution and
in the family level. Through the open discussion, it might be possible
to create awareness among the people of different class and profession.

Expressing
anxiety over the serious risk of HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh speakers said,
to prevent this deadly disease all of us have to speak on the issue from
our respective fields, we have to inform others and thus have to make
all people aware of HIV/AIDS. They also said, not the people of a
particular caste, class or religion, rather we all are at a risk of
HIV/AIDS. If all of us talk about AIDS, we will be able to prevent this
disease like measles, cholera and tuberculosis.
The
artists of Youth Voice, a cultural wing of CCD presented enchanting Baul
songs with the necessary messages relating to HIV/AIDS awareness.
Through the musical tune they called upon all to speak about HIV/AIDS,
its seriousness and about the high risk of AIDS in Bangladesh. The
popular Gomvira of the northern region was one of the main attractions
of the function. Through the interesting dialogues between grandfather
and grandson (Nana & Nati) the people were urged to talk frankly
about HIV/AIDS.
The
main attraction of the function was the charming songs of the renowned
singer of the country Asif Akbar. He rendered a total of 12 enthralling
songs there. At the interval of the songs Asif appealed to the audience
to be aware and to make other people the same to save the nation from
AIDS epidemic.
Hundreds of cross section people enjoyed
the enthralling cultural function and discussion about HIV/AIDS held at
the auditorium of Nanking Community Centre in the city.
As the trend to drug-addiction and sex-trade is rising among
the youth and students, they are becoming affected with
HIV/AIDS in an alarming rate. They have to be prohibited from
such a risky behavior through involving them in creative and
intellectual activities.
Speakers
called upon it while addressing the inauguration function of
the Interpersonal Debate Competition held for the first time
to make the students and youth aware of HIV/AIDS. Speakers
expressed their anxiety and said that due to the
socio-economic, political and satellite culture the youth and
students are becoming involved in many risky activities. They
are advancing towards drug addiction, drug trafficking,
illegal and unsafe sexual activities, which is leading not
only the youth and students rather the whole future generation
and leadership to an uncertainty and decay. The speakers urged
to build up the youth and students as active citizen through
involving them in creative and intellectual practice and
activities.

Departmental Head of Bangla Department Prof Dr Farida Sultana
inaugurated the competition held at the seminar room of the
department this morning.
The
motion of the inaugural day was "The role of female
community is main in AIDS prevention." Kazi Shofiqul
Islam, Student of the Sociology Department of Rajshahi
University (RU) became the best speaker today. Nazina Nasir
Khan, Student of Rajshahi University of Engineering and
Technology (RUET) and RU Student Saikat Islam took second
place jointly. A total of 15 debaters from RU, RUET, Rajshahi
College, New Govt. Degree College and Naohata Degree College
competed in the first day.

Dr Farida Sultana was the moderator. The second debate of the
first round will be held at the same venue on Sunday.
Over 100
students of different higher educational institutions
including RU, RUET, Rajshahi Medical College and Rajshahi
College are taking part in the competition supported by
National AIDS/STD Program (NASP) and UNICEF.
The newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of
Rajshahi University (RU) called upon the students to be
devoted to work for the welfare of the people and the country.
They
urged this while meeting with the organizers and workers of
the development organization Centre for Communication and
Development-CCD and its students wing Bangladesh Advanced
Students Alliance (BASA) in their office today.
During
the meeting the BASA delegation congratulated the newly
appointed VC and Pro-VC with flower wreath. RU VC also said,
due to the present education system, the students are becoming
deprived of getting practical knowledge and experience causing
a great obstacle for them in their service period. For the
interest of building up as a good citizen and skilled resource
stressing on the involvement of the students in social welfare
activities, he also said, in order to take over the leadership
of the country, the students must have necessary efficiency
and quality just now.
Meanwhile,
RU Pro-VC welcomed all round co-operation of all cultural and
students' organizations including BASA to confirm a congenial
environment for education and research work in the campus.

Due to the negative impacts of the Farakka dam, the
environment is facing a serious threat in the country,
especially in the northern region. The youth and students
community have been called upon to build up a strong stand
against such a decay of environment.
In the discussion meeting held on the occasion of World
Environment Day at the premises of Rajshahi College, speakers
calling upon the youth said due to the Farakka dam and the
blueprint of internal river linkage, Bangladesh
is in the face of a great environmental disaster. Continuous
heat strike and drought are the result of this natural
disaster. In order to maintain a suitable environment, the
youth and students community have to come forward and they
have to raise a strong voice against all types of harmful
practice and policy that are threatening to environment.
Otherwise, it will be impossible to keep the environment sound
and friendly to the human being.
In observance of the day, mass communication oriented
development organization Centre for Communication and
development-CCD and its co-organization Bangladesh Advanced
Students Alliance (BASA) organized a colorful rally and
discussion meeting in Rajshahi today. The rally started from
the Shahid Minar premises of Rajshahi College paraded Moni
Chattar, Sonadighi Morh, Zero Point, Alupotti and other main
thoroughfares in the city. A large number of workers of BASA
and CCD and teachers and students of different educational
institutions including Rajshahi University, Rajshahi College,
City College,New Degree College, Women's College, Madarbux
Home Economics College, Naohata College, Baneswar College,
Sardah College took part in the rally.
At the end of the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the
Shahid Minar Chattar in the college. The meeting presided over
by Organizer of BASA RU unit Tofael Ahmed Ujjol, was
addressed, among others, by CCD Campaign Officer Abdul
Muttalib Jewel, Program Organizer Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu, BASA
Organizer Nasim Ahmed, Nibedita Roy, Rehena Hoque Runa, Hosne
Ara Seema, Lutfun Nahar Koruna, Samiul Islam Ratul, Abu Munzed,
Sabrina Sultana Rimi, Roniur Rahman, Mahmudul Mohosin James
and Noor Mohammad Kamruzzaman. The British Council and
Connecting Futures supported the program.
About
11 thousand people die in every day due to tobacco related
disease and 50 lakh die in every year around the world and
this number will be 84 lakh a year within 2020.
The
speakers disclosed this alarming data in a meeting held at the
premises of Rajshahi College on the occasion of World No
Tobacco Day today.

British Council and Connecting Futures supported the program.
The
rally started from Shahid Minar ground of Rajshahi College
paraded Sonadhighi More, Moni Chattor, Daily Barta Morh and
other main thoroughfares of the city. About 100 people
including teachers and students from Rajshahi University,
Rajshahi College, Madar Bux Home Economics College, New Govt.
Degree college, City College, Govt. Women's College, Baneswar
College, Sardah Degree College, Nowhata College and the
development workers were present in the rally.
After
the rally a discussion meeting was held at the college campus
with Rehana Haque, Convener of BASA Rajshahi College unit in
the chair. The BASA members took a commitment and declared
that they would never smoke.
Among
others, CCD Campaign Officer Abdul Mottalib Jewe, Program
Organizer Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu, BASA Organizer Mahmudur
Rahman Sohel, A B M Siful Islam Sumon, Mahmudul Hasan James,
Nasim Ahmed, took part in the discussion focusing on the
background and significance of the day.
Asian
Harm Reduction Network is a network which is working for
reducing the harms related to the drug users, through out the
Asia. Project Coordinator Mr. Andrew Rankin is now visiting
CCD .
In raising
public sentiment and mass awareness for preserving human
rights, the media and pressmen have been urged to play an
effective role.
In the opening
ceremony of the weeklong training workshop on Human Rights
Reporting speakers raised this urge here today. Mass
communication oriented development organization Bangladesh
Centre for Development, Journalism and Communications (BCDJC)
and Centre for Communication and Development-CCD jointly
organized the training.
Speakers also
said the human rights violation is increasing at an alarming
rate in Bangladesh. Different political parties, government,
private groups and marked terrorist groups are equally liable
for this violation. They underscored the united effort of
different sectors of the state against all sorts of human
rights violation and the formation of independent Human Rights
Commission in the country.

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh M Ashiuzzaman, Assistant
Professor of Mass Communications Department of Rajshahi
University Moshihur Rahman and Prodip Kumar Pande and
CCD Director Golam Mortuza conducted technical sessions on the
first day of the training.
A total of 20
young journalists of different local and national newspapers
and news agencies working in Rajshahi are actively taking part
in the training supported by CIDA, a Swedish donor
organization.
AIDS
epidemic started haunting the countries in the world.
The number of HIV/AIDS infected people exceeded 4 crore
in the world. Solely in the last year 31 lakh people
died of AIDS across the world.
It was
disclosed in the program titled as We Are Always With
You held in observance of the International AIDS Candle
Light Memorial Day in Rajshahi today.
A
spectacular candlelight rally was held in Rajshahi
University today in memory of those who died in HIV/AIDS
and wishing long lives for those infected. Similar types
of program, wishing long lives for the HIV/AIDS infected
and in honor of the deceased was performed today in
Sunday, in more than 100 countries around the world.
Expressing solidarity with this international program,
Center for Communication and Development-CCD and its
students wing Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance
(BASA) organized the two-day program. National AIDS/STD
Program (NASP) and UNICEF supported the program.
The
candlelight memorial rally started in this afternoon
from the Central Library of the university. Various
sorts of colorful festoon, poster, red ribbon and
banners displaying HIV/AIDS prevention and
awareness-related messages adorned the rally. Some
hundreds of students, teachers and development workers
took part in the rally. The rally processed through
various significant streets of the university campus and
ended at the Sabash Bangladesh ground. An evening candle
lighting program with a long human chain was held here.
The participants stood silently in a row holding torched
candles in their hands and wished long lives of the
HIV/AIDS infected people worldwide and showed reverence
to the deceased.
On the occasion,
BASA Rajshahi Govt. College unit, Naohata Degree College unit
and Godagarhi Degree College unit also took similar rally and
human chain with torched candles in the respective campuses. A
HIV/AIDS-related quiz competition was also arranged at the
premises of English Department of Rajshahi Govt. College after
rally. Overall assistance in implementing this program was
provided by the members and organizers of BASA.
In order to
ensure the involvement of the students community in AIDS
prevention activities, communities rally and film show was
held at the premises of Nowhata Degree College and
municipality areas this morning.

AIDS related short film "Ojana Ghatak" was screened
through the multi media projector for the students and
teachers of college.

enjoying this short film the huge gathering came to know many
essential messages on HIV/AIDS issues.
National AIDS/STD
Program (NASP) of Health Department and UNICEF extended
financial support for the program.
The number of
HIV infected children under 14 in Bangladesh are 310 and 2100
children became orphan losing their parents due to HIV/AIDS.
Quoting the
reports revealed by UNAIDS it was disclosed in a discussion
meeting held in observance of the World AIDS Orphans day at
local New Government Degree College this morning.
With Organizer
of Bangladesh Advanced Students’ Alliance (BASA) Ashique
Hossain in the chair the meeting was addressed, among others,
by Programme Organizer of Centre for Communications and
Development-CCD Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu, Campaign Officer Abdul
Mottalib Jewel and BASA Member Umme Safiya Kaniz.
The meeting was
also told that the number of HIV infected children under 15 in
the world was 2.20 crore till 2004. Of them a total of 6.40
lakh children were infected solely in 2004. Among them 5.10
lakh, so far, died of AIDS.
In the
consequence of HIV epidemic one child is becoming orphan
losing either his mother or father in every 15 second in the
world at present. The rate is much higher in the AIDS affected
countries.
In the
Sub-Saharan African countries about 1.20 crore children became
orphan due to the same reason till 2004.
Due to the AIDS
prevalence the parentless children were mostly subjected to
repression and discrimination in the social and economic
context.
This Day is
being observed worldwide to show the sympathy and cooperation
to them.
On the occasion
CCD also arranged an exchange of views meeting with the
cultural personalities at its conference room this afternoon.
Chaired by
Executive Director of CCD Golam Mourtoza the programme was
addressed by Administrative Officer Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal.
CCD has taken an initiative to create mass awareness of
HIV/AIDS through folk-cultural show to reduce its prevalence.
National AIDS/STD Program and UNICEF supported these
activities.
The World Press
Freedom Day was observed here in befitting manner today. The
day’s programmes included rally, open dialogue and
discussion meeting in the city.
An open
dialogue was organized at the training room of Rajshahi City
Corporation with joint collaboration with Centre for
Communication and Development-CCD and Bangladesh Centre for
Development, Journalism and Communications (BCDJC). DANIDA/Royal
Danish Embassy, Dhaka extended financial support to conduct
the programs.
Taking part in
the dialogue the speakers said the existing disunity and
conflict among the journalists are the prime obstacles towards
creating congenial atmosphere for sound journalism.
They urged the
media professionals to become united for establishing their
freedom of expression and resisting any sort of assault and
repression on them.
Expressing
their grave concern over the frequent torture the discussants
said the journalists working in local and root level are being
subjected to various types of harassment and oppression.
Secretary of
Rajshahi Union of Journalists (RUJ) and Editor of Daily Natun
Probhat Sarder Abdur Rahman was the keynote speaker on the
occasion with Journalist Muhammad Zulfikar in the chair.

main theme of World Health Day 2005, 'Make Every Mother and
Child Count', mass communication and journalism oriented
development organization Center for Communication and
Development-CCD observed the day in a befitting manner through
different activities.
Among the
activities there was rally, discussion meeting and cultural
show. At the beginning of the day a rally started from the
daily Barta ground concluded at Old City Corporation premises
at Sonadighi. District Civil Surgeon office and CCD jointly
organized the program. NASP and UNICEF supported the program.
A huge number of Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance (BASA)
members from different units attended the rally holding
festoons, banners and wearing crown with much enthusiasm.
In observance
of the day, CCD and BASA Rajshahi University (RU) unit jointly
organized a discussion meeting and cultural show at the
central library ground of RU while BASA member Afsarina Runi
was in the chair. Program Coordinator of CCD Hossain Abdul Hai
and Program Organizer Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu addressed the
meeting highlighting different aspects, background and present
situation of public health in Bangladesh. Among others, BASA
Organizer Anisul Ashekeen Russel, Tofael Ahmed Ujjol, Mahmudur
Rahman Sohel, Anisur Rahman Litu and Farzana Alam Tithi spoke
on the occasion.
Speakers
underscored the sound health of the mass people to make a
happy, prosperous and developed Bangladesh. They also demanded
immediate inclusion of more public health related information
in the textbook of school and college. Speakers expressed
their dedication to work more for the underprivileged women
and children in the community.
At the end of
the meeting, BASA artists rendered an enchanting cultural
presentation on the occasion.
