Rajshahi,
December 01: Journalists are also active in the street to
create mass awareness of HIV/AIDS. They have started to
disseminate necessary messages on the deadly disease AIDS
through their means of mass communication, BAIDS News.
On
the occasion of World AIDS Day 2004, mass communication
oriented development organization Centre for Communication and
Development-CCD organized Meet the Press in Panchogarh, Natore,
Bogra, Rangpur, Pabna, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Naogaon
district separately. Above four hundred journalists working in
different local and national newspapers and news agencies
actively took part in the dialogues. At the end of the
dialogue all journalists brought out colourful rally in the
heart of the towns and paraded the main thoroughfares. The
towns' people watched the community rally on HIV/AIDS of
journalists and appreciated the initiative. The officials of
government and non-government offices and public leaders
opined that such an attempt of journalists would enhance the
AIDS prevention movement much ahead than earlier.
Rajshahi,
December 08: The female community has been infected with
HIV/AIDS mostly by their husbands in Bangladesh. So the to
save from such a deadly disease like HIV/AIDS.
Speakers
in the inaugural session of the orientation on HIV/AIDS held
at the premises of Rajshahi Madarbux Home Economics College
said it today. Principal of the college Salma Rahman attended
the function as chief guest while Documentation Coordinator of
CCD Mir Mohammad Hasan Abdullah was in the chair. Mass
communication oriented development organization Centre for
Communication and Development-CCD with the cooperation of
National AIDS/STD Program (NASP) and UNICEF organized the
function.
In
the discussion, speakers expressed their anxiety that the
females are highly vulnerable for HIV/AIDS due to their
physical and socio-economic status. Moreover, the male
partners have affected most of the women living with HIV, so
without making the women fully aware of HIV/AIDS, it is never
possible to prevent rapid infection of HIV/AIDS, they added.
Assistant
Professor of the college Seheli Akter and Raonak Jahan
addressed the function as special guest. Among others, Program
Assistant of CCD Kudrotusshama, Convener of Bangladesh
Anti-AIDS Students Alliance (BASA) Rajshahi A M Raihan and
Joint Convener Rebeka Sultana spoke on the role of students in
preventing HIV/AIDS and on the activities of BASA.
At
the end of the orientation, an enchanting video show of folk
culture and documentary film on HIV/AIDS was projected to the
present students of the college.
Rajshahi,
November 24: Though HIV/AIDS is spreading rapidly in
Bangladesh, the role of newspapers in preventing AIDS epidemic
is not satisfactory in the country. But the role of only local
newspapers published from different districts of northern
region was found more advanced in this regard.
After
a close survey on the AIDS related news items published in the
national and local newspapers from January to June in 2004,
Bangladesh AIDS Information and Documentation Services-BAIDS
disclosed this report today. It was also found that few
newspapers put emphasis on this issue as national crisis, but
the English dailies played more significant role in this
regard than the Bangla dailies.
Under
the Communication for AIDS Prevention Project (CAP), BAIDS, a
joint venture of Centre for Communication and Development-CCD
and CARE Bangladesh, conducted the survey on 28 daily
newspapers in the first half of the year.
It
was also added in the report that in the period of
January-February this year, the AIDS-related news coverage in
13 national and 15 local newspapers was very little. But after
the starting of the CAP project, a huge number of views
exchanges, orientation and training workshops on HIV/AIDS
issues were held with journalists, media owners and civil
society in different districts of the northern region to
flourish AIDS Journalism. As a result, the media people and
media owners highlighted much more news and views on this
issue in their respective newspapers in the rest of the
period.
The
study report said that the Daily Independent was at the top in
covering AIDS related news publication among the national
dailies. This time a total of 36 AIDS related news items were
published covering 406 inches in the Independent. Among them,
04 were organizational report, 18 were press release and news
items served by news agencies, 05 editorials, 03
sub-editorials, 03 features and 03 hard reports. In this
regard, the Daily Star and the Bangladesh Today are in the
second and third place respectively. These two papers covered
404 and 370 inches with AIDS related news items. The daily
Janokontho was at the bottom in the list of the national
dailies that covered AIDS related news items in the period.
This paper published only 6 news items covering 34 inches on
HIV/AIDS issue.
The
survey report also observed that in spite of having less
number of pages, the local and regional newspapers covered
much more news items on this fatal disease HIV/AIDS. Among the
regional dailies, the Dainik Barta, published from Rajshahi
was at the top position covering 44 news items in 350 inches.
Its news items included 32 pieces served by news agencies, 06
organizational reports and other 06 pieces investigative
reports prepared by the staff reporters of the Barta. The
daily Natun Provat and the daily Sonali Sangbad were in the
second and third position respectively in AIDS related news
coverage among the regional dailies. These two papers covered
AIDS related news items in 323 and 322 inches. The daily Ajker
Deshbarta published from Dinajpur was at the bottom covering
only 71 inches at the period.
From the media
analysis, it has been evaluated that most of the AIDS related
newspapers published in this period were served from either
some news agencies or some organizations. Moreover, these news
items were only informative rather than constructive and
educative.
Rajshahi,

rights issues and their treatment facilities, risky behavior
of the vulnerable people and their awareness, role,
activities, success and limitations of HIV/AIDS prevention
activities of CARE Bangladesh and other organizations, role of
politicians, intellectuals, religious leaders and civil

and awareness raising campaign.
